Oltrepò Pavese
Frecciarossa is one of the historic estates of Oltrepò Pavese, with a lineage that dates back to the early 20th century. Long before the region gained broader recognition, the Odero family was already focused on expressing the character of these rolling hills south of the Po River, farming vineyards rich in clay and limestone and well suited to Pinot Nero. Today, Frecciarossa remains one of the area’s most consistent and thoughtful voices.
Oltrepò Pavese is often described as Italy’s quiet stronghold for Pinot Nero, a region shaped by altitude, cooling breezes, and long growing seasons that favor finesse over force. Giorgio Oddero, the grandfather of Valeria, who heads Frecciarossa today, was a great enthusiast of Pinot Nero. His travels in Burgundy and Champagne led him to return to the estate with a renewed focus on quality and estate bottling. Today, Frecciarossa remains deeply committed to Pinot Nero, producing several different bottlings, including two reds, three sparkling wines, and this unique and delicious white wine.
The 2024 “Sillery” is a compelling expression of Pinot Nero vinified as a white wine, drawing inspiration from the blanc de noirs tradition. Gently pressed and handled with restraint, it offers freshness and precision, with subtle aromatics and a clean, energetic palate that feels both elegant and highly drinkable. It’s a wine that delivers clarity rather than weight, and charm rather than flash.
At the table, Sillery is a natural partner for seafood crudo, simple pasta with herbs and citrus, or soft cheeses and cured meats. Equally at home as an aperitivo or alongside a meal, this is a distinctive and beautifully balanced white from one of Northern Italy’s most underrated regions.
